FireWise Program

Every year, devastating wildfires burn across the United States and Madison County is not immune. The Quaker Run Fire in October 2023 burned over 4,000 acres and took a national force of forest fighters a month to put it out.  In the spring of 2024 a wind storm took down an old telephone pole and electrical fire that burned many acres and almost took out a RME neighbor's home.

Wildfires are a real risk--and RMEOA has been assessed by the VA Department of Forestry as being at high risk. We have a high load of downed trees, vines, and debris that have not been cleared off personal property. As a result, RMEOA was able to secure a grant for $10,000 from the National FireWise Program to mitigate our risk.

The good news is that there are things we can do in RME to protect our homes, property and community. Please review the material below to join in this important effort.
